CAN Supporter Gatherings: all welcome!

<<We meet in person and online, at our meetings and also when we're volunteering with other supporters at events around the year and taking part in accountability discussions. Here are some examples - we update regularly - and they're posted in our Newsletters. and Events notices. Join the mailing list to keep in touch!>>

Our Heaton get-together shared views (over vegetarian snacks and drinks) of the recent Emergency Briefing screening nearby, attended by about 100 people (a full house). Many people had been spurred to get more involved in climate action and wanted to work out priorities. The information in the documentary prompted people to feel: "We' ve no choice but to do something; we're running out of time".

Updates on Climate Action Newcastle's campaigns were provided, including the forthcoming UK Clean Air Night - deterring people from installing and using domestic woodstoves has been a major part of CAN's 2026 Cleaner Air campaign ( along with quicker introduction of e-buses and reducing garden/allotment bonfires). Stoves produce a fifth of the UK's fine particulate pollution, a dangerous toxin for which there is no safe minimum - winter sees peak pollution risk, with more burning and windows closed).

Friends and supporters (new, and longstanding) shared plans, hopes and ideas at our CAN Social at Hazlerigg community centre and guided nature walk.

🐛 Havannah reserve: on our evening stroll, we saw the front line of battling to reverse the UK's catastrophic decline of protection for wildlife and plants. Regular planes overhead, taking off from nearby Newcastle Airport, underlined why our campaigns for cleaner air and to stop airport expansion are so necessary.

🌎 priorities for action: supporters shared their passion to raise awareness, spread the word about what's needed, influence decision-makers, stress the urgency of tipping points getting ever-closer. "We can be very powerful if we all get together" - this comment on our Ideas Sheet summed it up! If you'd like to strengthen our volunteer team to help get together with supporters and community groups, see suggestions below!
🥬 food for the planet! - thanks to Alan (for fresh-baked vegan rolls) and everyone who contributed to a yummy buffet! As the wild garlic foraging season ends, recipes were shared - we're lucky to have one of the best areas in the UK.
