COP30: Newcastle March - band, union, Red Rebels

Updated: 2 days ago

COP30 Marchers took a new route this year - due to ambitious climate resilience works around the city.

The Meze Mundo band led the parade from the Civic Centre past the regional headquarters of Unite the Union, where a huge banner demanding Climate Justice and Workers Justice was on display..

This new route was timely; it took place the day after the Trade Union Day of Action for Climate. Dylan Wilson from the PCS union spoke earlier at the rally about the TU Year of Climate Action, to fight for futureproof jobs as the workplace transitions away from traditional to new industries.

The march returned to the traditional route through Northumberland Street below the area cordoned off for Blue Green Newcastle planting and drainage works. These are part of big plans to improve air quality and reduce flooding risks caused by the run-off from more intensive rainfall.

Shoppers and marchers encountered another first, when the parade linked up with the astonishingly powerful presence of the Red Rebel Brigade.

Their silent glide along the march route stopped passers-by in their tracks.
